Wildcats rally to edge Express

ESPANOLA, Ont. – The Elliot Lake Wildcats picked up a pair of third period goals to skate past the Espanola Express 2-1 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play Wednesday at the Regional Recreation Complex.

It was tightly played opening frame with the contest remaining scoreless through 20 minutes.

Espanola grabbed a 1-0 lead in the middle session as Zachary Decontie collected his second marker of the season to put the home side up by one through two.

Elliot Lake came back with the equalizer early in the third as Spencer MacLean picked up his 20th of the campaign with a man advantage marker.

Chad Lopez and Cole Hepler assisted on the play with the latter extending a consecutive game point streak to 14 in the process.

The Wildcats’ Connor Rider then notched the game-winner with 8:23 remaining in regulation as the visitors then held on for the win from there.

Aaron Mackay made 25 saves to register the victory for Elliot Lake.

Kevin Labelle was the busier of the two netminders as he faced 41 shots in defeat for the Express.
