SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – A three-goal first period outburst allowed the Soo Thunderbirds to take control early as they went on to soar past the Espanola Express 7-0 in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Monday evening at Essar Centre.

Sault Ste. Marie were quick to get in flight as Mark Tassone opened the scoring 53 seconds into the contest as he notched his ninth of the season early.

Zach Senecal then upped the Soo lead to 2-0 near the five-minute mark of the frame as he collected his team-leading 12th tally of the campaign.

Two more Soo efforts allowed them to extend their cushion to six after 40 minutes thanks to tallies courtesy of Matthew Caruso and Gage Stephney.

Ryan Waterhouse then capped off the night’s scoring late in the third to finish off the one-sided decision.

Brendan Jay dished out two assists to aid the winners cause.
