Strong third sends Canadians past Express

ESPANOLA, Ont. – A trio of third period tallies helped the Rayside-Balfour Canadians break a 2-2 tie and go on to defeat the Espanola Express 5-2 Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Regional Recreation Complex.

It was scoreless until late into the opening frame before Cayse Ton connected for the Canadians with 49 seconds left in the session.

Espanola came back to even things up 5:38 into the middle session thanks to Riley Tilot and the Express then went in front a couple shifts later on Riley Smith’s seventh of the season.

Rayside-Balfour drew level before the frame was complete on Andre Frappier’s first of the year, coming at 14:01.

Action in the third saw Chad Denault notch the eventual game-winner at 3:34 while Dylan Callaghan’s initial marker of the campaign added some insurance with 8:50 to go.

Jorge Perez then finished things off for the visitors with a late man advantage marker to round out the scoring

Karson Massey and Kyle Liinamaa chipped in with two assists apiece for the Canadians.

Shots on goal in the contest favoured Rayside-Balfour by a 35-33 count with Owen Johnsson picking up the win and Taylor Unruh the loss.
