McHutchion strikes twice as Express derail Cubs

ESPANOLA, Ont. – Ty McHutchion picked up a pair of goals while teammates Ryan Rubic, Josh Boucher and Kyle Caron dished out two assists apiece to help pace the Espanola Express to a 5-3 triumph over the Greater Sudbury Cubs in in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Sunday afternoon at the Regional Recreation Complex.

Each side would collect a tally apiece in the opening frame as McHutchion connected for Espanola while Kyler Campbell countered for Greater Sudbury, during a man advantage.

It was more back in forth in the middle stanza, with each team potting two tallies each.

After Pineshish Whiteduck put the Cubs in front at 2:56, McHutchion came right back for the Express just 22 seconds later to tie things up.

Down a skater, later in the session, Nicholas Toffoli struck shorthanded at 16:05 to make it 3-2 for the home side.

Picking up a two-man advantage after that though, the visitors capitalized thanks to Cole Quevillon as his initial NOJHL effort sent the clubs to the second intermission level at 3-3.

Espanola were quick to strike in the third as James Eng took a double deflection at the left of Greater Sudbury goalkeeper Joel Rainvile and chipped in the eventual game-winner from close range.

The Express then tacked on another a few minutes later just as the first of a two-man advantage as Caleb Resch cranked a low blast from the high slot at 5:35, in what proved to be the day’s final goal.

Patrick Boivin made 34 saves to collect his initial league victory in net for Espanola while Rainville faced 47 attempts in defeat.
