Espanola rallies to skate past French River

NOELVILLE, Ont. – The Espanola Express rallied for three tallies in the final 10 minutes of regulation to defeat the French River Rapids 5-4 Saturday in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at Noelville Arena.

Espanola got the game’s first goal 11:23 into the contest with an unassisted effort from Joel Grandbois.

French River came out in the middle session and got going offensively early in the second as Tyler King converted on a penalty shot attempt.

Thomas Farrell put the Rapids at front at 8:35 while Taylor Karr’s first NOJHL goal 10 minutes later put the hosts up by two.

The Express got one back with just 20 seconds left in the middle frame as Cameron Anklewich brought the visitors closer heading to the third.

After King connected again to put the Rapids back up by two 3:13 into the final frame, Espanola started their comeback with 8:23 to go as Jason Bednarski notched his fourth of the campaign.

The Express then tied it at 15:46 on an Aaron Roschinsky marker before completing their rally on Aaron Beauchamp’s game-winner with two and a half minutes to go.

Espanola held the edge in shots on goal by a 38-21 count.

Aaron Callan picked up the win while Kevin Labelle had a second period relief stint for the Express.

Zach Mills made 33 saves in defeat for the Rapids.
