Shankar tallies twice in Timmins’ triumph over Espanola

ESPANOLA, Ont. – Jacob Shankar tallied twice, including providing the eventual game-winner, to help propel the Timmins Rock to a 4-2 triumph over the Espanola Express in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action Friday at the Regional Recreation Complex.

A tight-checking first period saw neither side score as goaltenders Al Rogers of the Rock and Mitchell Jacobson of the Express both produced a spotless frame.

The second stanza belonged to Timmins however as they scored three times in the session to go up 3-0 after two.

Spencer Segui started the offensive outburst at 4:35 while Cory Sprague’s 20th of the season, 71 seconds later, upped the visitors cushion.

Shankar then picked up his first of the night during a man advantage at 18:16.

Aaron Roschinsky got one back during a power play for Espanola at the 6:13 mark of the third only to see Shankar added some insurance for the Rock just over three minutes later.

The Express wrapped up the night’s scoring with a late one off the stick of MacKenzie Aiken, with 17 seconds remaining, while they were up a man.

Bain Cunningham had a pair of assists for Timmins in the game.

Rogers finished with 39 saves to earn the win for the Rock.

Jacobson and Logan Sawka, in relief, faced a combined 37 shots in defeat for Espanola.
