Eagles too much for Express

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Soo Eagles got four-point nights from both Gord Helmuth and Roman Gaudet to help them defeat the Espanola Express 6-2 Tuesday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Pullar Stadium

The contest, which was a make-up game that was postponed over the weekend, saw Sault Ste. Marie open the scoring 6:49 in on Jacob Palmerio’s 11th goal of the season.

Espanola drew level five and a half minutes later thanks to Ian Thompson’s ninth, but the Eagles’ Gaudet struck with eight seconds left in the stanza to put the hosts up 2-1 entering the second.

In that middle stanza, the Soo took a 4-2 lead getting tallies from Nate Harris, via the power play, and Helmuth sandwiched around one by Mitchal Payette for the Express.

The Eagles put the game away in the third after Helmuth notched his second of the night and 19th overall two minutes into the frame during a man advantage opportunity before Reed Gregory iced it midway through the period to wrap up the night’s scoring.

In all, Gaudet had three assists in the game while Helmuth and Alex DiBacco had two apiece.

Cam Bruggrabe made 32 saves to record the win for the Eagles while Kevin Labelle faced 43 shots in defeat for Espanola.
